How is rhinitis different
from sinusitis?

Sinusitis is inflammation of the paranasal sinuses (air pockets around the nose),
caused by bacterial or viral infection,
allergic rhinitis, or other factors.
When the sinuses become inflamed, mucus can't drain properly and builds up as thick, pus-like discharge.

nasal conditions,
causes and
symptoms
differ,

so treatment
must be tailored
to each.

Cause 1.

Allergic Rhinitis

Rhinitis caused by an immune reaction to specific allergens such as pollen, dust, pet dander, or mold,
with symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and watery eyes.

Cause 2.

Rhinitis

Besides allergies, viruses, environmental irritants, and temperature changes can cause
nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing. Allergic rhinitis is one
type of rhinitis.

Cause 3.

Sinusitis

Inflammation of the air pockets around the nose, often triggered by allergic rhinitis.
Symptoms may include nasal congestion, thick (often yellow or green) mucus,
facial pain, headache, reduced sense of smell, and cough,
and sometimes fever.

Treatment by the Book

Sinusitis is classified as acute or chronic, and by whether nasal polyps are present.
Sinusitis does not always require surgery.
Even with polyps, depending on their size and extent and how severe the symptoms are,
medication and careful monitoring may be the right choice.
